Classic and Retro Nottingham Forest Football Shirts

Nottingham Forest are one of the few British clubs that are still wearing their original colours today and they hold the honour of being the first British team ever to officially wear red. The shade of red chosen by the clubs founders way back in 1868 was a darker shade then favoured today however and was known as ‘Garibaldi Red’ after the Italian patriot and leader of the country’s Redshirts party. Forest are also known as being the originators of Arsenal’s red strip after several ex-Forest players brought their old kit with them when they joined the Gunners. White shorts and red socks regularly accompany the team’s strip although black socks were worn for a short while in the early 1970s. Black has subsequently often been used as a third trim colour on the home outfit. Forest have one of the longest running kit-supply deals in recent years thanks to their relationship with Umbro who took over club kit production in 1986. For a long period in the late 1990s and early 2000s in fact Forest and England were arguably the only big names in Umbro’s roster. Prior to the Umbro deal, adidas manufactured the team strip and accompanied Brian Clough’s men through their glory days of the late 1970s/early 1980s. Electrical goods manufacturers Panasonic were the club’s first sponsor back in 1980 in a two-year deal. Since then Wrangler, Skol, Home Ales, Shipstones, Labatts, Pinnacle, Capital One and Victor Chandler have all graced the team shirt. Club away strips tend to be either white or yellow with blue also popping up from time to time - although of course the almost obligatory black strip has cropped up in recent years.
