During his time at the club Harkness made 139 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 3 goals, in a spell that included loan spells to Huddersfield and Southend before moving on permanently in 1999, joining former manager Graeme Souness at Benfica. After his short spell in Portugal, Harness went on to play for Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday before being forced to retire at the age of 31 while playing for Chester City.
