We have all noticed it, sitting in the stands and seeing the flood of beautiful retro football shirts slowly fill up the stadium, providing a visual artistic representation of your beloved teams history and thinking, “When on earth did this craze happen?”
“It was in my grandad’s loft”, “I bought it for £5 from a car-boot sale”, “It was just in a charity shop”, “have you seen that website that’s got all those amazing shirts?”. It seems like there is a million and one ways that us fans have acquired that shirt we dreamed of wearing in our childhood. Most not understanding the value and growing desire for the garment they are now sporting to the pub. The vintage soccer jersey industry has taken a somehow subtle but unbelievably rapid growth, even grabbing the attention some of the biggest sportswear brands in the world.
But why is it happening now? Football shirts unlike other most other sports are symbols of who we are, tribal to many of us, our identity and our showcase for our biggest passion in our lives. Below I have identified why the demand of vintage football shirts has greatly increased.
Fashion Meets Football: The Streetwear Influence
Arguably the most pivotal factor for the pioneering new industry of Classic Football Jersey’s is simply fashion. 90’s fashion is back in, the big brash manufacturer logos, baggy streetwear and crazy pattern designs. The image of Liam Gallagher in the Man City Brothers sponsor shirt instantly springs to mind. There is no doubt that the designs produced across the board by all the manufacturers during the 90s was the peak of football shirt designs. In fact, they were that good there has been numerous different sightings of celebrities from all over wearing the rare clobber. Additionally, to really prove how large the demand has been, a lot of the big clubs are re-releasing some of the best designs with reproductions. Moreover, some clubs have even taken inspiration from their latest releases from past designs, usually the 90s era. Why? Almost every club’s greatest shirt was one of their shirts from that era. And now fashion has returned to that style, for the moment, this has caused a huge collision with a strong demand for football shirts.
Investment Pieces: Retro Shirts as Assets
A very interesting take that has sparked the craze for vintage football shirts is that simply they are now valuable assets. Most shirts, particularly from the birth of this vintage football shirt industry have increased significantly in value, and it does not look like that price increase is slowing down any time soon. In fact, most 90’s shirts have seen a percentage increase that your local financial advisor eyes would water at. This is not financial advice by any sort however, if you are looking at getting into this we do recommend that you just storeand preserve them in a good place to ensure this price increase does occur, if you cannot resist but to wear the jersey please do not wear whilst eating Spaghetti, trust me. Similar tothe booming trainer industry, with the likes of limited-edition releases and the rarer older pieces can massively spike this price, in the retro soccer jersey game it is the match worn one pieces that demand the biggest prices. Most notably was the sale of the ‘hand-of-god’ shirt from Maradona, selling for a whopping £7.1 million at auction, some decision by Steve Hodge to swap that shirt.
Sustainability & Ethical Fashion
There is no doubt consumers are choosing to shop much more consciously. Fast fashion is having a devastating impact on the environment, cheap low quality garments mass produced and shipped across the world, worn a few times by the westerner and then thrown out to only be shipped back, often to the same destination as it was made in the first place and ending up in landfill. Who would of thought this be bad for the environment…right? In fact, the industry of fast fashion manages to tick every box of behaviours that are bad for the environment. It is evident that this growing acknowledgment from people that we need to start shifting our mindset, this shift has spilled in to football.
Fans are turning to vintage football shirts that have stood the test of time. This shift aligns with the broader movement toward ethical fashion, where consumers prioritize quality over quantity. Now instead of having shirts for a season and moving on to the next, more and moreof us are alternatively sporting a banger that will last us much longer and lets be honest, look cooler.
The Nostalgia Factor: Football’s Golden Eras
Last and definitely not least is the nostalgia factor. It is amazing how just turning up at the pub before a game in your retro jersey can spark a conversation. Reminiscing about what your team did that year, those not forgotten barclaysmen, your record striker signing who couldn’t hit a barn door, the cup run, the away days, all of it. That reflection, shared memories, there is some magical about it all. The beautiful game is not just beautiful on the pitch but off it as well.
Anyway, enough of the poetry lets wrap this up. For the record, maybe for my own guilty conscious, I feel guilty by not giving certain shirts a mention, in this article. The reason being, I want to keep this as a quick summary article and not a dissertation. If you love your football shirts like I do, it is simply impossible to give a top 10, there are hundreds that are simply sublime.
The factors outlined above have created a perfect storm to catapult the retro football shirt industry in to the stratosphere. Big companies are casting a beady eye as they attempt to take their on piece of the market. Meanwhile the older original jerseys continue to soar in popularity and price (unfortunately for those collectors from the beginning). It is great overall however, it ensures the manufacturers who acquire these
