Formed in 1864, Wrexham are the third oldest professional football club in the world and the oldest in Wales. Established by a group of cricketers in the area looking for a winter sport, the club was founded in the Turf pub which backs into their home, the Racecourse Ground. The Racecourse is the oldest international football stadium in the world and still holds matches involving the Welsh national team.
Wrexham began life with a traditional red and black hooped strip before moving on to plain red shirts, white shorts and red socks which for over a century they have been famed for. Wearing these traditional colours they have won a record 23 Welsh Cup's and played in Europe reaching the 1976 European Cup Winners' Cup Quarter-Final. They have had numerous iconic sponsors in the area such as Marston's Ale and Wrexham Lager, the latter which is strill sung about on the terraces in North Wales.
