Classic and Retro Scunthorpe United Football Shirts

Scunthorpe are another of those clubs who seem to have suffered a mid-life kit crisis in the late 1950s/early 60s. After spending their entire existence up to that date in various combinations of claret and blue (generally claret shirts with blue sleeves) they ditched the whole colour scheme in 1959 - 9 years after finally gaining admission into the Football League - and started wearing white shirts with blue and yellow trim, paired with blue shorts. Ten years later, this was then abandoned and a Liverpool-like all-red strip was sported. It wasn’t until 1982 with the arrival of lower league kit specialists Hobott, that claret and blue returned to the club in the form of an exciting light blue strip with a claret V and claret pinstripes. These colours have remained at Glanford Park in various designs ever since, with the exception of the mysterious revival of white kits between 1994-1996 and 2000-2003 although some consistency did remain during these periods as the outfits were liberally trimmed with claret and blue. Never the most glamorous of clubs, the side struggled to find a shirt sponsor for much of the 1980s. The first company to appear on The Iron’s shirts were builders merchants Brikenden in 1987 who remained on the jerseys until 1994. A wide variety of Iron away kits have been sported over the years including white, red and yellow/navy. For a brief period in the early 2000s green was the order of the day, and in 2010-11 the side sport a carbon copy of Celtic’s infamous ‘bumble-bee’ hoops in vivid lime green and black
