Classic and Retro Doncaster Rovers Football Shirts

A relative newcomer to football might be mistaken for thinking Doncaster Rovers have always played in red and white hoops. In fact the team have chopped and changed between kits colours throughout their 130+ year history with red and white hoops only worn consistently since 2001 and previously in a period stretching from the 1930s to the 1950s. The club’s first strip back in 1879 was a navy blue jersey with a large yellow X across the front and topped off with a dainty tam o’shanter cap! Various combinations of blue and white were worn for the next few years before red made its first appearance in the club kitbag in 1885. For the first decade of the 20th century red and white stripes paired with black shorts were favoured, before being replaced by 10 years of red shirts and white shorts. Hoops first appeared in 1931 but were then superceded by white shirts and black shorts for the early part of the 1950s before red shirts and white shorts reappeared. Keeping up?An all white strip was worn for much of the 1960s before yet another stint in red kits in the late 1970s.Barring a couple of years in hoops and a couple of years in white, red kits were predominantly worn by the side from then on until the decision to stick with hoops came in 2001 in a move to stabilise the club’s erratic kit history.Doncaster’s first shirt sponsor was Cil in 1982 and side then a huge variety of companies have appeared on the club jerseys, the longest deal being with Doncaster Free Press that lasted from 1988 to 1993.Not surprisingly, given the colour of the side’s early kits, blue has been the most common Rovers away kit although one curious anomaly was the green change jersey worn from 1990 to 1992.
