Classic and Retro Burnley Football Shirts
It took Burnley 28 years to eventually come round to the claret and blue combination that the team are associated with today. From their founding year of 1882 to 1910 the side experimented with a whole rainbow of various colour combinations and styles: blue and white stripes, white with a blue sash, amber and gold stripes, all black, plain red, plain green, even pink and white stripes!Since adopting claret and blue, the colour scheme has, more often than not, been worn in the form of a claret shirt with blue sleeves and generally paired with white shorts and either claret and blue hooped or white socks (although black were favoured in the early part of the 1900s.) Other shirt designs that have crept in include claret and blue quarters courtesy of adidas in 1996-1998, all claret from 1969 to 1975 (and later again in 2007) plus the memorable claret Umbro shirt with large blue ‘V’ on the chest from 1975 to 1979.Burnley away strips are normally either white (with claret and blue trim) or yellow and in fact the side’s 2006-07 yellow, or more strictly speaking amber, away kit won the Football League’s Best Kit Award for that season. For the club’s first ever campaign in the Premier League (2009-10) they sported an away strip of white shirts and black shorts - a throwback to the 1935-39 strips when claret and blue were temporarily discarded.Insurance company Endsleigh hold the record for the club’s longest-running shirt sponsor in a deal that lasted for a whole decade from 1988 to 1998. Housebuilders Poco were the side’s first sponsor back in 1982.
