The Genuis of General Pic-Doh!
(Posted on 12/09/18)
Ferro de General Pico, a third division Argentine side you’ve probably never heard of.
However, if you’re an anorak for football shirts you’ve almost definitely seen their goalkeeper shirt for 2018/19, and if you haven’t you’re in for a treat.
Ahead of the new campaign ‘Verdolaga’ goalkeeper Nicolas Caprio’s shirt will feature the face of a backtracking Homer Simpson in the bottom right corner, the distinguishing feature on an otherwise plain green strip.
The now popular ‘meme’ has been pasted across the internet for a long time, years after the original scene depicting Homer Simpsons backing into a bush after being shot down by Ned Flanders aired in 1994.
It’s since been used to demonstrate football fans backing away after their team’s defeat, especially after being so vocal pre-match.
The club, currently competing in the Torneo Federal A in Argentina and have been playing competitive football since 1934. Plying their trade at the 17,000 capacity Coloso del Barrio Tolleres the side have competed in the Argentine second division during their glory days of the 1980’s but have never troubled the countries elite.
It’s unlikely that anyone outside of Argentina or South America at a push has ever heard of General Pico, but midway through 2018 a plain green shirt with a touch of genius sent shockwaves across the globe with anyone and everyone wanting to talk about this gem from a far corner of the planet.
It’s not the first of the smaller clubs to receive worldwide recognition. Cultural Leonesa unveiled a Tuxedo strip whilst CD Lugo’s home shirt emulated a pint of beer, propelling the brand of two Spanish second tier sides to a monumental level.
However, this particular shirt isn’t a branding or marketing stunt, it’s not the workings of a club board or strategist. It’s the brainchild of shot-stopper Caprio who’s wicked mind has birthed the most genius shirt of the season bar none.
The ‘keeper - who’s made just a handful of appearances since signing in 2017 – is an experienced 29 year old who has slipped down the ladder but was handed a chance by Pico after six months without a club. With the amount of shirts the club has gone on to produce and sell around the world, you could say he’s repaid them.
If you want to get your hands on this outstanding piece of football satire and what is already becoming a huge collectors item, you can do so by pre ordering the shirt here.
For us, it’s an instant classic!
