Kit of the Year 1992

In Vintage Football Shirts style, instead of looking at this year's Kit of the Year we are going back 30 years to look at the best shirts from 1992. Let us know if you agree on Social Media.

The Rossoneri colours of AC Milan’s home shirts always look great but the 1992-94 kit by adidas is one of the best with the strong Motta sponsor. The squad was full of star names including Dutch trio van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard and recognisable Italian stalwarts in Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini. They claimed the Scudetto easily under the stewardship of legendary manager Fabio Capello.

This light blue Umbro third kit is probably England’s most bold shirt ever, with a three lions design sublimated in the material. As with most international third kits it was seldom worn by the first team and it wasn’t used at a major tournament, however, the fact that it’s a true 90s design gives it a place in the 1992 kit of the year.

If you wanted to personify 90s football shirt fashion then this is probably the one to pick out. Norwich were at the top of the Premier League for the longest amount of time this season and were leading the pack at Christmas 1992. Some would nickname it ‘the bird poo kit’ and would rather add it to the Hall of Shame gallery than Kit of the Year but we love it.

This kit screams Channel 4’s Football Italia and Gazza which all started in 1992. When you combine this kick of nostalgia with a vintage Umbro design and the Banco di Roma sponsor it elevates it to one of the best Lazio kits of all time.

You wouldn’t instantly think of orange and Barcelona, however, the colour has been worn multiple times in their history, most notably in 1992. This kit was worn on the night Barcelona beat Sampdoria in the 1992 European Cup Final, the last tournament before changing to the Champions League.

Known fondly as the ‘bruised banana’ shirt this Arsenal away kit by adidas is one of the great kits worn in the first Premier League season. It’s a kit that has been referenced many times by other teams over the years but the yellow and black original still holds its ground as the best of the lot.
Manchester United 1992-94 Third by Umbro

Umbro decided to honour the past when they took over as the Man United kit manufacturer in 1992. The home was great but the green and gold third kit was special. Taking the colours from Man United’s founding club, Newton Heath, and pairing with the drawstring collar was a stroke of genius. The kit is easily one of the best kits of 1992.

The 'Tiger' home shirt is regularly voted one of the worst kits of all time but we are going to go against the media outlets and vote it one of the greatest kits of 1992.

PSV shirts are always nice but the home kit released in 1992 with a great pinstripe red and white design was one of the best with it’s strong white colour and classic Philips sponsor. Romario was on fire in this kit, scoring 7 in 9 appearances in Europe and 32 goals over this season which got him a big move to Barcelona.
Denmark 1992-93 Home by Hummel

The big event of 1992 was the European Championship Final in Sweden which was won by the unlikeliest of teams. Denmark hadn’t even qualified for the tournament and it is suggested half the squad were on the beach when they got the call-up by the national team coach after the expulsion of Yugoslavia. Denmark went on to lift the trophy and pushed the red Hummel home kit up to legendary status. Hummel know what they are doing with a Denmark kit!
