BLOG | Leicester City - The Ultimate Hangover

We’ve all been there, we’ll stay for one and before you know it you’re in a taxi home with a bag of chips proclaiming you’ve had the best night of your life, but the next day you find yourself dizzy, confused and with a patchy memory.

Well from the opening day of the Premier League season it was evident that one team had sipped one too many glasses of complimentary champagne laid out by the FA, Leicester City.

Claudio Ranieri took the Foxes from relegation cannon fodder to Premier League champions with Jamie Vardy’s rags to riches tale the centre piece. Now having fought off Tottenham as well as the big boys having faltered, surely Leicester were on the cusp of not just the biggest trophy in their history, but that of the biggest shock in football history.

Taking that in to consideration, they didn’t just go out for one more than they should have, they ended up on a bit of a bender. Just like every over indulgence, they woke up in unfamiliar surroundings wondering what just happened. That place was the Champions League.

This season Ranieri began the defence a week after losing the Community Shield to Manchester United at Wembley. It came against Hull City, minnows to the giants that the Foxes had become, but slowly but surely this would be the beginning of their English dominance coming to a swift halt.

The 2-1 loss at the KC Stadium was followed up by a poor winter, failing to win a league game in November against the likes of Middlesborough, West Bromwich Albion and Watford.

But Leicester had a saviour, the metaphorical bacon sandwich if you will. Their first season in the Champions League was truly in swing and they were determined to enjoy it no matter where in the Premier League they were.

They stormed Group G’s first three games with wins over rivals Brugge, Copenhagen and giants FC Porto, before the latter went on to beat them 5-0 in Portugal, but they were through and nobody batted an eyelid, I mean, come on, to quote manager Ranieri at the start of the season “We are in Champions League man, dilly ding dilly dong!”

But the Tinkerman wouldn’t be around for much longer, as in the Round of 16 First Leg they would lose 2-1 in Spain. With success comes money and with money comes expectation, something the board believed the Italian had not lived up to, Ranieiri was gone.

As the football world mourned the sacking of perhaps one of the brightest and most loved managers in the game they’d storm on. But all the while they prepared for the second leg at the King Power Stadium as well as Liverpool the next weekend.

League form was poor with defeats to Swansea City and Manchester United as well as the exit from the FA Cup against Millwall. But they’d see off Liverpool 3-1 as they went into the crucial European clash.

A week previous Barcelona had come back in the most unbelievable fashion to progress at the Camp Nou against PSG, and it seemed under new manager Craig Shakespeare that they took a leaf out of the Catalans book.

Wes Morgan and Marc Albrighton turned the tie on its head and now all of a sudden they could make history in the Quarter Final when they face Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Now all of the sudden, the side who just don’t stop surprising people are on the cusp of outdoing the unthinkable.
